The Release of Dopamine can make the process of putting in effort feel pleasure.
The role of dopamine
in our perception of time and how it affects our motivation and ability to
enjoy the process of hard work.
When we focus solely on the reward that comes afterward, we tend to associate
less pleasure with the activity itself and extend the time bin over which we
perceive that experience. This undermines our ability to access dopamine during
the effort and makes the activity more painful and less efficient.
In contrast, cultivating a growth mindset and attaching the feeling of friction
and effort to an internally generated reward system can lead to accessing
dopamine release inside of effort, making it reflexive for all types of effort
and amplifying all endeavors.
Focusing only on the trophy or end goal undermines the entire process.
The speaker suggests that we can access the
pleasure from effort aspect of our Dopaminergic Circuitry by telling ourselves
that the pain we feel during intense friction will lead to an increase in
dopamine release later. We should also tell ourselves that we are doing it by
choice and because we love it.
This is different from thinking about the reward that comes at the end. The
ability to access this pleasure from effort aspect of our Dopaminergic
Circuitry is the most powerful aspect of dopamine and is accessible to all of
us. To prevent interference and ensure we get dopamine release from effort
itself, we should not spike dopamine before or after engaging in effort.
Instead, Learn to spike your dopamine form EFFORT ITSELF.
